Allan Strand Biography

By Nils Nelson
An artist on the green, he's letting the balance of the putter brush the grass. Each stroke becomes a measure of time on its way to finding the round hole cut in the green. The younger players, they can't believe the way he keeps going as they watch from the shade of a eucalyptus, letting the strong leaves make a drink of what they see: A man who never tires, feeding the earth one white ball after another.

Allan Strand, designer of the Dandy Putter, began crafting his innovative golf club in 1990. His work was born out of a mixture of frustration and desire, of wanting to improve his putting. What followed was a veritable mission, to make a putter with features that would take putting to an entirely new level.

Early family influences in sports, science and art had instilled in Allan a drive for excellence and achievement. His mom was a gifted piano teacher in their Minneapolis home. His dad was a natural athlete, basketball coach and a high school science teacher with a Master's degree in physics.

When Allan was 10 years old and already showing the signs of being a piano prodigy, he began what would become a 14-year relationship with Dr. Bernard Weiser, an internationally known concert pianist and teacher. Over time, Dr. Weiser taught Allan the essence of mastering the instrument while remaining in a state of complete relaxation. Although Allan won numerous young artist awards, life guided him away from a concert career.

Nevertheless, the personal qualities instilled within him -- fortitude, grace, perseverance and an innate nature to accept nothing less than excellence -- drove Allan forward. Ultimately, to the goal he set for himself in 1990 and the achievement of that goal: The Dandy Putter. An "instrument" that allows each golfer to achieve his highest level of performance on the putting green.
